Weekend Movie Rental Recommendations

Movies, Music, and Whiskaz Rental Thread. This is where we talk about the digital media in our lives.

Postby whiskaz » Fri Sep 02, 2005 8:22 am

So, I watched a few good ones this week and instead of posting a new thread for each, I figured I'd just compile them into one post.

So, if anyone wants to play along... Each week (say, on Fridays) post your movie recommendations from your previous week's viewing. While your at it, post anything you wouldn't recommend if you watched something unworthy.

Here goes...

This movie stars Stephen Chow which wrote/directed/and starred in KungFu Hustle and another personal favorite - Fist of Fury II

last night rented the ring 2. didn't like it. It had it's good moments like the deer scene but bad ending. really centered around the little boy which I found really annoying in both movies. but will probably go and see transporter 2 tomorrow in the theater.

Watched Crash tomorrow. It's OK for a movie that tries to get you thinking about racism (of all types). It's good for a one time viewing (kind of depressing)...

BR, you can't recommend movies that aren't even out, until TODAY.

Criminal! :)

Agree w/ Ring 2... it was crap. I'm sick of pg-13 ghost stories / asian remakes.

If "Boogeyman" had blasted one more loud sound at me I would have kicked my TV in... what a horrible way to "scare" someone - it's tired and a cop out.

I dunno about the deer scene in R2 either - a bit fakey - made me curious as to why, if they couldn't make the deer look less cgi-ish, why they would put so many on screen and for so long. Ah well.

ETA: Picked up 'Crash' at lunch... will it make this weekend's recommendation list?! We'll see.

Tell me what you think? It was OK, but it's not "view again" worthy...

I think this one's rated pg-15 or something ;)
Met some film student once and she recommended this movie.

That was a joke I edited in, in response to Whiskaz pointing out the obvious...

Hasn't anyone ever told you, my jokes suck?

ok I got to see a horror flick that reminded me of the cheesy eighties horror flicks like fright night or early puppetmaster. it's called ring of darkness and its about of all things a boy band that are demons or something but you can tell they were ripping todays pop stars like the lead singer of sugar ray, eminem, ricky martin, arron carter. they had all the members looking very similar. even had a justin guarini rip off. they had a groupy scene that was just hillarious. for cheesy horror buffs I highly recommend.

so there you have it boy bands really are from hell

When I was growing up, I wasn't allowed to watch the really "heavy" horror stuff. I was like 13 before I ever saw Halloween, Nighmare, Friday 13, etc.

Anyway, I just got around to Netflix'ing Hellraiser and watched it this weekend. Man, I think I'm like 20 years too late. I thought this was always supposed to be one of the better/scarier movies, but it really blew. I tried to keep in mind that the effects and stuff were 20 years old, but it was the story/scripting/acting that really got me.

My mum was the opposite. I was allowed to watch some pretty scary shiz when I was younger. Sleepaway Camp stands out the most along with F13: The Final Chapter and The Evil Dead. I started Hellraiser back then as well, but she promptly stopped it because of the s-e-x. I eventually got around to watching it and liked it. It's not your typical horror film, and "Pinhead" was nothing more than a cenobyte in it (and hardly in it), until the sequel Hellbound came out and he sort of became a main character. Clive Barker remains one of my favorite authors and directors. Unfortunately he hasn't made a film since Lord of Illusions.

Recommendations for this weekend still pending. Mostly watched wife-happy crap this week which won't make the list.

So I should Hellbound back in queue (took it out after watching that first one)?

Currently have The Office seasons 1&2 (BBC version), Gunner Palace (documentary made by US troops), Thunderbirds, and The Pacifier.

Didn't get to watch many movies over Labor Day weekend, due to opening weekend for football and being in Raleigh all weekend.

I did watch Hellraiser, though, Secondhand Lions which was pretty good, and Taking Lives which wasn't bad but typical.

If you didn't like the original, you may not like Hellbound either. However, Hellraiser 3 is interesting apart from the first 2... you might enjoy it.
